Mean vs Median Income
This dataset includes both mean income and median income. While both mean and median are measures of central tendency, they measure different things and when distributions are uneven, they can be very different.
In particular, mean is sensitive to outliers (extremely high or low values) which can skew the mean and make it no longer be a measure of a typical value in the dataset. Median is simply the middle value in the dataset when sorted, so it is not effected by outliers or extremes.
When it comes to income in the United States, mean income is higher than median income since wealth is unevenly distributed to the highest income brackets. If you had an equal income distribution, median and mean would be the same, but mean U.S. income is 40% higher than median income. Since income is so unevenly distributed, median income is a better measure than mean income.
What is median income in the U.S.?
There are several ways to evaluate median income in the United States. The most common income measure is median household income (HHI). Median household income in the U.S. was $78,538 in 2023, the most recent year available. Median income represents household income at the midpoint of all households if they were sorted in order of income. It is effectively the income of a typical U.S. household.
What is mean income in the U.S.?
Mean household income in the U.S. was $110,491 in 2023, the most recent year available. Mean income is the same thing as average income and is calculated by dividing total household income in the U.S. by the number of households.
Why is there a large difference between mean income and median income?
The difference between mean income vs median income is very high in the United States. Mean U.S. income at $110,491 is 40% higher than median income at $78,538 and is nearly $32K more in raw dollars.
Mean income is higher than median income because wealth is unevenly distributed to the top 1% and top 10% of the U.S. population. If you had an equal income distribution, median and mean would be the same. This unequal income distribution is ubiquitious across all parts of the U.S. and at all levels, from ZIP code to state. In fact, 98% of U.S. ZIP codes have a higher mean income than median income for ZIP codes with at least 500 residents.
